I must say some of these are getting a bit predictable - people in their 20s/30s, jobs in the arts mainly, doing something care-free. How about a bit more variety?
-

How about getting a musician to replicate the famous Bach portrait? That would be amusing. Or a trumpeter to replicate the similar Gottfried Reiche portrait.

With 365 subjects, most set up weeks before, he's pretty much limited to those who come to him. Artsy young people are the ones most likely to be following this project in the first place.

Hey, Cowardly Anonymous- Bill's work is honest. If you can't at least appreciate this, why check the site? They are p-o-r-t-r-a-i-t-s of real individuals just being themselves. The point isn't for Bill to put any type of style onto the person, its for the person to bring out whatever they would like to the portrait. The beauty of it is that every person he photographs IS different from the other. Didn't we learn this is second grade or something? Anyway, if you don't like the work, don't check the site. Easy as pie! I'd love to see a project you've done in which you capture someone COMPLETELY new and unlike any other every day, Mr. Popularity.

PS- Lovely picture. I love cupcakes and cute outfits!

Hi there everyone. You've all got good points. The Anonymous poster is right that my subjects could be more varied. Carpeicthus is right that my volunteers tend to skew towards the younger artsy types because this is on the internet, and because they're more likely to be willing to volunteer for this kind of thing. Also the people I'm shooting now, I did book back in February. I've got someone for every day the next month or so, but have put new scheduling on a hiatus for the past couple of weeks in an attempt to come up with a better system which should lead to a more varied sampling. Now that the project is standing on it's own two feet I can start being more particular about the people I choose to shoot, while at the same time not removing all of the organic nature of the process. I've updated the participate page to reflect this. As for the look of the photographs, I certainly do have a 'look' that I prefer. But then again so does every photographer that I know of. To Mary's point, for the most part I try to capture who that person is and not put a layer of my creative process on top of it. So in the end, not every one of them is the most visually arresting photograph ever taken, and they may not win awards for set production, but hopefully they're aesthetically pleasing and true. Thanks for everyone's comments and support. -bw

THANK YOU,BILL! I have been noticing that any slightly negative comments are immediately pounced upon, even to the point of rudeness and name calling. I was just thinking "Hmmm, I wonder what Bill thinks about this. Somehow I doubt that he expects every comment to be a fan letter." I scrolled down just a line or two and there was his own comment. I check this site regularly for the photographs and the comments. It would get pretty boring if only positive ones were "allowed". The free expression of ideas makes for an interesting site. Thank you, Bill, for sharing your talents with us and for letting us know that you apppreciate all viewpoints.

I really like the light here. The colors, patterns, composition. While I look forward to your upcoming subject variances, what I enjoy most about this project is how you manage to capture the essence of the person you're shooting no matter their age or background. Keep up the good work.

I fully agree with Iris. Let's respectfully give and receive all opinions. Neither mudslinging nor sunshine up the ass really forward the conversation or the work, but differing opinions do. Love the site and looking forward to more diversity as well.

Everyone!! Shhhhh! Can't you see I'm trying to relax and eat a cup cake here?!? ; ) Bill, thanks so much for the lovely, lovely photograph. I adore it, and I'm so glad I got to be a part of this amazing project. Such fun! - N

ADORABLE!

Nicki is a beautiful woman and you've captured her and all of her many facets. She's sexy, domestic, maternal, warm and sexy. (Yes, she deserves sexy twice.)
- JDR

Wow. This makes twice I read the words of the artist. Cool! Is it okay if I am oblivious and still look at each picture as if it were a story? I hope so. It's the only way to enjoy my ignorance! I am not in the position to offer critique, thank the heavens, but in equal gratitude I get to see this product. Oh but I must say that there has been a variety that I recall. And it is spring and young is appropriate as well. Now about this cupcake! What a sensual photo. I could see mouths watering at it for many reasons. She could stop traffic with that cupcake peeling of hers.
- Boo - http://www.xanga.com/Boowasborn

I think this is a gorgeous photo, from the light to the dress to the shoes - and most especially the cupcake. Boo, you are so right about the sensuality of the cupcake, from the way she's looking at it to the process of unwrapping it.
- Rachel Kramer Bussel - http://cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com

I too like to look at each portrait as a picture with a story. Unless you are a "professional" having your portrait taken is an interesting experience and probibly one with "a story." Some days he gets more of a story in his pictures than others but the beauty of this project is that it is totally varied and in the eye of each one of us who is following this.
